Vow Introduces Australia’s First Home-Ready Cultured Meat Product: Cultured Quail Sprad

Cultivated meat company Vow, under its Forged brand, has announced the release of its first product designed for home consumption in Australia. This week, the company made available a limited batch of its Smoked Cultured Quail Spread, marking the first cultured meat product that Australians can purchase and prepare in their kitchens.

What’s in the spread?

The spread contains 40% cultured Japanese quail, but the primary ingredient is butter. It is described as having a rich, smoky flavor with a deep umami profile, derived from the combination of smoke, salt, and meat. The product is being offered exclusively in the Greater Sydney area for this initial drop.

The quail cells that have been used are sourced locally in Sydney, and the spread is smoked over American Hickory. The quail cells used in the product are sourced locally in Sydney, which are cultured in a nutrient-rich broth that provides everything they need to grow and multiply, much like the fermentation process used in bakeries and breweries. Over the course of 79 days, the cells are carefully nurtured into meat with entirely new and unexpected flavor and texture profiles.

Approval unlocks market

This product follows Vow’s approval from Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) earlier this year. The approval was finalized in June after a review and acceptance by the Food Ministers’ Meeting. Vow’s cultured meat had already been approved for sale in Singapore in 2024.

In addition to the Smoked Cultured Quail Spread, Vow is working on other cultured quail products, including tallow candles, whipped pâté, foie gras, and potato croquettes. These items are still under development, with Vow aiming to expand the range of cultured meat products available to consumers.

For now, the Smoked Cultured Quail Spread is available for online purchase within the Sydney area, where it is expected to sell out quickly due to its limited batch production.
