Israeli biotech startup Novella Innovative Technology has partnered with Australian functional ingredient innovator Metaphor Foods to commercialize natural, clean-label preservatives made using plant cell cultivation.
Novella uses plant cells to create pure compounds using novel, precision-controlled environmental technology. The company’s AuraCell™ platform enables the growth of zero-waste bioactive compounds with a guaranteed consistency, reportedly reducing resource use by 99%.
Through the collaboration, AuraCell™ technology will be used to create natural antioxidant and anti-microbial compounds. These ingredients will be part of Metaphor Foods’ Hela Natvance® range of natural food protection solutions.
“This is a long-term strategic commitment in a market with high demand for natural solutions,” said Geoff Gordon, CEO of Metaphor Foods. “We’re integrating Novella’s solution into our natural food protection systems to bring it to market quickly, responsibly, and effectively.”

“Reshaping the definition of natural preservation”
Metaphor Foods is the innovation and accelerator arm of Hela APAC, and works to bridge gaps in the food industry across the Asia‑Pacific region. As part of the partnership, Metaphor Foods will support Novella in finalizing application studies and regulatory pathways while advancing a commercialization plan.
Valued at $10 million over seven years, the long-term supply relationship is designed to secure ingredient availability, establish manufacturing readiness, and ensure consistent quality at scale. While the initial focus will be on preserving animal products, the technology has the potential to be used in alternative protein products, baked goods, and more.
The partnership is intended to meet the growing demand for natural, clean-label ingredients. In lab trials, Novella’s ingredient was reportedly able to replace natural antioxidants currently in use, while reducing overall costs and extending shelf life by 30%. The company is now in the final stages of scaling up production, and aims to launch its product commercially at the beginning of next year.
“We’re not just offering an ingredient — we’re reshaping the very definition of natural preservation for food products,” said Itay Dana, CBDO and co-founder of Novella. “This partnership energizes the mutual vision to deliver cleaner, cost-parity solutions to the food and nutraceutical industries. Our technology platform and the diverse range of products currently in development address some of the most pressing challenges the food manufacturing industries face today.”
