Umami Bioworks Marine Cell Cultivation Delivers PDRN Without Reliance on Salmon Sperm Harvesting

Singapore-based biotechnology company Umami Bioworks has introduced Marine Radiance™, a platform for developing marine-derived bioactives, and announced what it says is the world’s first animal‑free polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) for use across skincare and medical applications.

“We are rethinking how bioactives like PDRN are made”

PDRN, a compound used in anti-aging skincare, wound healing, and regenerative medicine, is currently sourced from salmon sperm. This conventional method involves transporting salmon reproductive organs across global supply chains, a process that raises logistical, ethical, and biosecurity concerns.

Enabling localized production

Umami Bioworks’ new PDRN is produced using cultivated marine cell lines grown in controlled environments. According to the company, this approach produces a bioequivalent ingredient without the need for animal harvesting, while allowing production to be scaled and localized.

The launch marks a diversification for Umami Bioworks, which until now has concentrated on cultivated seafood products, including fish-based pet treats, whitefish, and caviar. The company’s proprietary ALKEMYST™ platform uses AI-assisted cell cultivation to develop marine ingredients for multiple sectors, including cosmetics, supplements, food, and pharmaceuticals.

Rethinking how bioactives are made

The global PDRN market is projected to expand rapidly, driven by its growing use in both personal care and medical applications. Umami Bioworks reports that it is already working with partners in the skincare and regenerative health industries to develop new PDRN-based formulations.

Gayathri Mani, Product Manager at Umami Bioworks, stated, “We are rethinking how bioactives like PDRN are made. Our platform provides a scalable, animal-free source of PDRN with optimized yields and the flexibility to meet growing global demand through localized production.”
