Mara Renewables Secures $9.1M for Fish-Free Omega-3 Made With Precision Fermentation

Mara Renewables, a biotechnology company developing algae-based solutions for human and animal nutrition, has secured USD$9.1 million from multi-stage investment firm S2G Investments.

Mara will use the funding to expand its sustainable omega‑3 platform, increase its R&D capacity, and address critical gaps in global nutrition supply chains. The company has developed a fish-free alternative to conventional omega-3 supplements, using precision fermentation to help microalgae grow efficiently in controlled environments. The aim is to provide a reliable, high-quality source of omega-3 while reducing pressure on marine ecosystems.

Last year, Mara reportedly supplied enough algal DHA to offset around 6.7 billion anchovies from the supply chain. The company’s products are said to deliver scientifically proven health benefits, with applications including infant formula, dietary supplements, functional foods, animal health, and more.

Transforming the sourcing of vital nutrients

Mara now plans to strengthen its global manufacturing footprint through strategic partnerships, support customers in developing easy-to-consume products for human nutrition, and deepen its commercial collaborations across key global markets.

According to the company, Omega-3 DHA plays a key role in maintaining overall health, including cognitive function, vision, cardiovascular performance, and prenatal development. However, a large proportion of the population is believed to be deficient in this nutrient, and the supply of omega‑3 DHA from wild-caught fish is not enough to meet the rising demand. As a result, Mara sees an opportunity to close the gap sustainably.

“At Mara, we are committed to transforming the way the world sources vital nutrients like omega-3s,” said Harry Boot, CEO of Mara. “Our partnership with S2G strengthens our ability to meet growing global demand with reliable, high-quality alternatives that protect aquatic ecosystems, reduce reliance on wild fisheries, and support the health of people and animals alike. We’re proud to have a values-aligned partner who brings deep experience and shared ambition.”
