Maia Farms Raises $2.7M in Oversubscribed Funding Round to Scale Mushroom & Mycelium-Based Ingredients

Maia Farms, a Canadian food tech company developing mushroom and mycelium-based ingredients, has secured $3.75 million CAD ($2.7 million USD) in an oversubscribed seed equity round.

The round was led by Active Impact Investments, with follow-on investments from Nya Planet, Ag-West Bio, PIC Investment Group, and Deep Checks. Maia Farms previously announced strategic and non-dilutive support from Genome BC, Natural Products Canada, Protein Industries Canada, and the National Research Council of Canada.

The funding will be used to support Maia Farms’ next stage of growth, which will include scaling commercial production, expanding the company’s portfolio of commercially available ingredients, and deepening partnerships with food manufacturers and ingredient distributors.

Throughout this year, Maia Farms plans to advance its fermentation and extrusion processing capacity, strengthen its proprietary Fungal Intelligence platform, and expand its commercial and operational teams to support long-term supply agreements.

“Maia has had an amazing growth trajectory”

As part of the financing, Maia Farms has announced the expansion of its Board of Directors, with Mike Winterfield of Active Impact and Yuan Shi of Nya Planet both joining. The company says this will bring additional expertise in commercial strategy and climate-smart food systems.

The new round takes the total amount raised by Maia Farms in 2025 to over $6.5 million CAD, inclusive of equity and non-dilutive funding. In October, the company received $1.75 million from Genome British Columbia’s Industry Innovation (I2) Fund.

Maia Farms was founded in 2021 by Gavin Schneider, Ashton Ostrander, and Dr. Sean Lacoursiere.

“I’m grateful for the support of our new financial partners,” said Schneider, who is the Chief Executive Officer of the company. “Maia has had an amazing growth trajectory, and we are making a real impact by putting food first. With this funding, we are focused on building Canada’s next great food technology company. Our growth is the result of deep intention and the perseverance of what a small, committed group of people can do together. Mushrooms solve problems in food manufacturing in an economical and sustainable way. We are determined to support our customers to lead in this next wave of food innovation.”
