Tetra Pak Strengthens Fermentation Technology with Bioreactors.net Acquisition

Tetra Pak Processing Equipment SIA has acquired Bioreactors.net, a Latvia-based company specializing in the design and manufacturing of bioreactor systems. Established in 1996, Bioreactors.net has nearly 30 years of experience providing biomass and precision fermentation solutions, particularly in the production of proteins and other food ingredients. As part of the acquisition, approximately 15 employees from Bioreactors.net will join Tetra Pak.

Bioreactors.net’s systems are used across various stages of production, ranging from laboratory and pilot projects to full-scale commercial operations. The company’s expertise spans the production of fermentation-derived foods and ingredients, making the acquisition a key step for Tetra Pak in bolstering its capabilities in the New Food sector.

Tetra Pak’s expanded bioreactor portfolio

Rafael Barros, Director of the New Food Business Stream at Tetra Pak, commented on the acquisition: “The addition of Bioreactors.net complements our existing upstream and downstream processing portfolio with fermentation capabilities. Together, we will deploy their full portfolio of bioreactor solutions under the Tetra Pak brand – offering advanced food production systems.” Barros further noted that the acquisition would help accelerate the development of next-generation bioreactors, supporting both emerging innovators and established producers in scaling production sustainably.

Biotech’s growing role in food

The growing interest in biotechnology, particularly fermentation and bioprocessing technologies, is tied to the need for more sustainable food systems. These innovations are seen as critical to addressing global food production challenges, particularly as the world’s population continues to grow.

This acquisition complements Tetra Pak’s ongoing investments in the New Food sector. Earlier in 2025, the company opened the Tetra Pak® New Food Technology Development Centre in Karlshamn, Sweden, and in 2023, it launched Biotech Heights in Lund, Sweden, an innovation hub developed in partnership with Lund University.

Janis Misins-Jubels, Head of Manufacturing at Bioreactors.net, expressed the company’s view on the acquisition: “Joining Tetra Pak is a major milestone for us. Our decades of expertise in bioreactors, paired with Tetra Pak’s existing portfolio, global reach, and resources, will accelerate the delivery of world-class fermentation solutions to customers around the globe.”
