Simple Planet Moves Closer to Halal Certification with New Serum-Free Technology

Seoul-based startup Simple Planet announced the will pursue Halal certification for its cell-based food products, as part of its strategy to tap into the global Halal market. This initiative comes on the heels of a recent collaboration with the Halal Science Center (HSC) at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed last month. The partnership hopes to facilitate the certification process for cell-based products and expand their reach in Halal markets worldwide.

Development of serum-free culture medium

In addition to this collaboration, Simple Planet has developed an edible, serum-free culture medium using probiotics-derived metabolites, which is seen as a critical step toward meeting Halal certification requirements. Probiotics-derived metabolites are naturally free from Haram substances, making them a suitable and permissible option for Halal food production, as they avoid concerns related to animal-derived ingredients such as fetal bovine serum.

The recent Fatwa issued by the Korea Muslim Federation (KMF) further supports Simple Planet’s efforts. The Fatwa, which recognizes cell-based food products and ingredients as Halal, serves as an important step for the company in securing access to Muslim consumers. This Fatwa is the second such ruling in the world, following a similar one by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS).

Requirements and inspection process

According to KMF, cell-based ingredients can be deemed Halal if they are derived from Halal sources and manufactured in accordance with Halal principles. However, for final certification, a comprehensive inspection of the production processes and facilities will still be required.

“We aim to enhance accessibility to cell-based foods, contribute to food security, and help alleviate hunger worldwide”

Dominic Jeong, CEO of Simple Planet, noted, “The global food crisis caused by climate change is a critical issue that the world is paying close attention to. By developing cell-based ingredients that can be safely supplied without being affected by environmental factors and establishing a sustainable food production system, we aim to enhance accessibility to cell-based foods, contribute to food security, and help alleviate hunger worldwide.”
