Former Henkel and JBT-Marel Executive Jan Agter Appointed as CEO of Mycoprotein Producer ENOUGH

Mycoprotein producer ENOUGH has announced that Jan Agter will assume the role of Interim CEO, succeeding co-founder Jim Laird.

Agter is described as an experienced former executive at Henkel and JBT-Marel, and was most recently at Hooghoudt Distillers. He has over 25 years of experience as general manager in complex operations in an international setting. Laird will oversee the transition over the next six months, before moving to a non-executive role.

ENOUGH was founded in the UK in 2015, and announced plans to construct its first industrial-scale facility, co-located on a Cargill site in Sas van Gent in the Netherlands, in 2021. Construction was completed at the end of 2022, and the facility began producing the company’s ABUNDA mycoprotein in mid-2023 using large-scale biomass fermentation.

“I’m delighted to welcome Jan to ENOUGH and look forward to working with him on the transition,” said Laird. “The company will benefit from his deep operational experience and track record scaling manufacturing processes. Our current focus is on maximising production to meet the needs of a large and growing market.”

Other appointments

ENOUGH has also announced the appointment of Justin Smith as Technology Director, and Claire Meechan as Finance Director. Smith was previously CTO for Arkeon and is said to have significant experience in biotechnology and pharma, including fermentation. He will work for ENOUGH CTO and co-founder Craig Johnston, and will head the R&D and Process Technology teams.

Meechan joined ENOUGH in 2023, and has been promoted to the Leadership Team in recognition of her skills and experience. She has a background in leading finance in established operational businesses, and will take full leadership of the Finance and Business Support team. Elaine Ferguson, who is currently CFO, has chosen to leave the business and will support Meechan in the transition process.

“I am very excited to be joining ENOUGH, and I am inspired by the ambitions of the company,” said Jan Agter. “Jim and the team have established a manufacturing facility that has the potential to become one of the largest sustainable protein facilities in the world. I look forward to working with the team to scale ENOUGH’s manufacturing to meet the high demand for its product.”
