Dutch cultivated meat company Meatable has announced its inclusion on TIME’s prestigious Best Inventions of 2024 list.
Meatable has been recognized for its opti-ox™ technology, which allows cultivated meat to be produced from a single sample of cells in a matter of days. The technology works by accelerating the cell differentiation process, allowing muscle and fat cells to be created much more efficiently than with other cell cultivation methods.
This approach lowers not just the speed but also the cost of cultivated meat production. Additionally, it minimizes resource use, avoiding the environmental impact and months-long rearing process associated with conventional meat.
According to Meatable, the opti-ox™ technology is a key part of the company’s strategy to position itself as “an asset-light, affordable, high-quality cultivated meat tech provider to the global meat industry”.
“Cultivated meat revolution”
Meatable reported in March that it had slashed the production time for its cultivated meat to just four days, claiming to have developed the quickest cell-cultivating method in the world. The following month, Meatable made history as the first company to hold an officially approved cultivated meat tasting in the EU. Meat industry veteran Jeff Tripician was appointed as CEO in May.
Meatable’s cultivated pork products are currently pending regulatory approval in Singapore, where it is hoped they will launch next year. At the beginning of October, the company received a €7.6 million Innovation Credit from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, which it said would be used to improve productivity and reduce costs in the run-up to commercialization.
“Our goal has always been to create real meat that is better for the planet and its people”
“We’re deeply honored to be recognized by TIME for our opti-ox™ technology, which we believe is at the forefront of the cultivated meat revolution,” said Daan Luining, CIO and co-founder of Meatable. “Our goal has always been to create real meat that is better for the planet and its people, while still delivering an excellent taste and texture.
“With our planet’s resources under increasing pressure and demand for meat only growing, it’s evident that our current food system is unsustainable. This acknowledgment from TIME is a tremendous validation of our approach, and of our incredible team working day and night to make this happen.”
