AMSilk Appoints Former Evolva CEO Christian Wichert as New Chief Executive

German biotech materials company AMSilk has named Christian Wichert as its new Chief Executive Officer. He succeeds Ulrich Scherbel, who will take on the role of Chief Operating Officer for AMSilk’s Premium Filaments division.

AMSilk, headquartered in Neuried near Munich, produces silk proteins through precision fermentation rather than traditional sericulture, supplying biodegradable fibers and ingredients to the textile, automotive, medical and consumer care sectors.

Wichert commented, “AMSilk is a true pioneer in its field, and I am honored to join as Chief Executive Officer at such an important stage in the Company’s development. What particularly impressed me is the combination of a unique technology with significant market potential and a highly committed and purpose-driven team.”

A background in biotech transformation

Wichert brings more than 25 years of leadership experience across specialty chemicals, consumer packaged goods, MedTech and industrial biotech. He most recently served as CEO of Evolva AG, a publicly listed Swiss biotechnology company, where he oversaw its sale to Danstar Ferment AG, part of the Lallemand Group.

At AMSilk, Wichert will focus on strengthening commercial performance and scaling the company’s silk protein technology and precision fermentation capabilities, with particular attention to its Consumer Care Solutions division.

Dr. Wolfgang Colberg, Chairman of AMSilk’s Board, said the appointment reflects the company’s focus on commercial execution. “Christian brings a strong track record in leading international businesses, driving performance and building the organizational structures required for sustainable growth,” he said.

Scherbel moves to filaments division

Scherbel, who led AMSilk through its transition from technology development to commercial market entry, will remain with the company. He previously oversaw partnerships with 21st.BIO, Evonik and Ajinomoto, and the company’s €52 million funding round completed last year.

Scherbel stated, “I am proud of what we have achieved, transforming AMSilk by securing strategic partnerships with 21st.BIO, Evonik, and Ajinomoto, and bringing the first commercially available products based on AMSilk’s biotech silk protein yarns to market. I look forward to continuing to develop our Premium Filament business as a key strategic growth pillar and value driver for AMSilk.”
