VEGDOG, the German company best known for its plant-based dog food, has expanded into the cat food market with a product called VEGCAT Pure Bites.
The new snacks are made from fermentation-derived protein and are claimed to be both hypoallergenic and easily digestible. They have a balanced nutrient profile that has been developed in collaboration with veterinarians; this includes taurine, a vital amino acid that cats must get from their diets.
The production process involves fermenting biomass with microorganisms, resulting in a protein content of 60%. The snacks are free of artificial colourings, flavourings, and animal proteins, making them suitable for sensitive stomachs. In tests, they were reportedly accepted by almost 100% of cats.

“Taking the next step”
The news comes after VEGDOG raised €9 million in Series A funding earlier this year. Additionally, the company partnered with biotech startup MicroHarvest in 2024 to introduce a dog treat made from biomass fermentation-derived proteins.
“Having already grown VEGDOG into the leading brand for vegan dog food in Europe, we are now taking the next step with VEGCAT,” said Tessa Zaune-Figlar, chief executive and founder of VEGDOG. “From the very beginning, our vision was to replace meat-based products in the pet food sector with healthy plant-based alternatives.
“Thanks to new, innovative raw materials and scientific advances, it is now possible to feed cats a balanced plant-based diet. This opens up completely new opportunities – for greater sustainability and for a future in which love for animals does not come at the expense of other animals.”
The new snacks are now available via VEGDOG’s online stores in Germany, Austria, and Italy.
